Myrsine coriacea Myrsine coriacea (Ratoncillo)

Description: A small to medium tree 5 to 25 m. height and 10 to 50cm diameter.

Natural history:

Distribution: Habitat: Common in pastures and secondary forests at 1200 to 2500 m. or higher. Grows from the Peruvian Andes to Costa Rica.

How to recognize:  Morella cerifera is a small tree with leaves and fruit quite similar to Myrsine coriacea, but the leaves have serrated margins.

Uses:  Madera dura y pesada, empleada para postes de cercas y leña.

Leaves. Leaves: 2 x 8 cm, elliptic, spiraled in dense clusters at twig tips, underside much paler, without teeth, lateral veins obscure, pubescent mainly on the petiole, translucent red or yellow dots and streaks on leaves.

Hojas simples, alternas, agrupadas en los extremos de las ramas, con puntos y rayitas de color púrpura, visibles en el envés, de 5-12 cm de largo y de 2-4 cm de ancho, lanceoladas, con ápice agudo o acuminado, bordes enteros y base cuneada. Pecíolo corto.

Flowers. Flowers: Mar – Jul, dioecious, 3-mm flowers with 4 to 5 green petals clustered along twigs, often below the leafy segments.
Flores verde-amarillentas, en pequeñas agrupaciones a lo largo de las ramitas, visitadas por abejas y otros insectos. Florece y fructifica durante todo el año, principalmente de octubre a mayo.

Fruit and Seeds. Fruit: Sep – Dec, 3 to 4-mm 1-seeded berries in dense clusters along leafless sections of twigs.

El fruto es una drupa pequeña, verde, con rayas y puntos marrón-púrpura sobre la superficie. Las semillas son dispersadas por animales.

Trunk. Tronco recto y cilíndrico, desprovisto de ramas hasta un cincuenta por ciento de su altura total. Ramas delgadas, extendidas y horizontales. Corteza externa blanco-grisácea, lenticelada, internamente es marrón- rojiza.
